What is the “Celebrating Women: Student Writing Showcase”?

The purpose of the “Celebrating Women: Student Writing Showcase” is to engage students to honor and celebrate women who have made a real difference in the lives of people in their local communities.

The League of Women Voters (LWV), the showcase sponsor, was founded in 1920, the year women won the right to vote. Our vision has stayed the same since that time:

We envision a democracy where every person has the desire, the right, the knowledge, and the confidence to participate.

We are a nonpartisan community organization that encourages active participation in the community and the civic process.

The LWV of South Central Texas works on vital issues of concern to rural counties in our South Central Texas community. We honor and celebrate the work of women who have made Colorado, DeWitt, Fayette, Gonzales, and Lavaca Counties better through their lives. We want to make the work of these women visible and inspire other women and girls to actively participate, lead, and boldly achieve for themselves and the communities.

Showcase Focus

We are inviting any student in grades 9-12 who is currently enrolled in a public, parochial, or private school, or in a home study program in South Central Texas, to celebrate a woman in his/her life or community. To do this, they will submit an original essay, poem or spoken word creation. We consider South Central Texas to include Colorado, DeWitt, Fayette, Gonzales, and Lavaca Counties.

Specifically, we invite students to focus on one the following Leadership Characteristics while telling the story of a woman in their world who exemplifies that characteristic. Students are welcome to celebrate a woman who may not have received the public recognition she deserves for her contribution.

  1. COURAGE:  a woman who, facing significant barriers, championed a cause in which she deeply believed.
  2. DETERMINATION:  a woman who solved a community problem, despite widespread inertia, apathy, or ignorance around her.
  3. HERITAGE:  a woman of generations past whose achievements enriched our lives.
  4. HEROISM a woman whose heroic spirit was tested and shown as a model to all in Colorado, DeWitt, Fayette, Gonzales or Lavaca Counties and beyond.
  5. INITIATIVE:  a woman who seized the opportunity to use her talents and created her own future.
  6. STEADFASTNESS:  a woman who persevered in advocating for a cause in which she deeply believed.
  7. VISION:  a woman whose sensitivity to women’s needs led to significant achievements for women.

A panel of judges from LWV’s membership will review the submissions and select the seven most outstanding entries for recognition at the League's Celebrating Women Event on March 10, 2024. The judges will assess each entry using the following criteria:

  • How well does it tell the story of a woman and the leadership quality she exemplifies?
  • Is the main leadership quality she exemplifies clear to the reader?
  • How well does it explain the impact this woman has made on the student or on her community?
  • Does it broaden our understanding of the role that women are playing in our community?
  • Is the entry inspiring? Will it demonstrate leadership and encourage others to seek opportunities to grow?
  • Is the entry well written?

There will be seven (7) awards of $300 each. The awards may be related to different leadership characteristics, or some may be written about the same characteristic.

The LWV will feature all award-winning entries on the League of Women Voters of South Central Texas’ website.  The seven award winners will be invited to read or perform their entries at the League's Celebrating Women Event on March 10, 2024 at Schulenburg's Senglemann Hall.
