Honoring Women's Contributions to Our South Central Texas Communities

Every year, March is designated Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor women’s contributions in American history.

The League of Women Voters of South Central TX (LWVSCTX) League celebrates Women's History Month with our signature event, Women Making History.

Every woman has a story worth telling, and together, these stories weave the rich tapestry of our shared experience. Each March, the League of Women Voters of South Central Texas recognizes Women's History Month by honoring area women whose inspiring stories remind women of today and future generations that their voices and stories are a vital part of our collective history. Women Making History is our invitation to our South Central Texas community to join us in this joyful work by nominating a woman for special recognition.

In 2023, LWVSCTX kicked off our first Women Making History 2023 with an afternoon at Schulenburg's historic Senglemann Hall. That first celebration included recognition of the eight women currently serving as Mayors in our South Central Texas community, and hearing an inspiring presentation and call to action by Schulenburg native Arleas Upton Kea.

Our 2024 Women Making History event featured students from area high schools and the women they chose to honor with essays and poems by participating in our first Celebrating Women Student Writing Showcase.

In 2025, we invited community members to nominate women for special recognition. Women Making History 2025 featured presentations on the eight incredible women selected from an impressive field of nominees, and the three students whose essays were judged "best of the best" from the entries in our second annual Celebrating Women Student Writing Showcase.

In 2026, we once again invited community members to nominate women for special recogntion. Presentations recognizing seven outstanding nominees, along with presentations from four students whose essays and poems were judged "best of the best" in our Student Writing Showcase, were the highlights of the day.

We look forward to our fifth annual Women Making History event on March 14, 2027 - once again at La Grange's Historic Casino Hall.

STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS
by Joyce Johnson Rouse

I am standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before me
I am stronger for their courage, I am wiser for their words
I am lifted by their longing for a fair and brighter future
I am grateful for their vision, for their toiling on this Earth

We are standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before us
They are saints and they are humans, they are angels, they are friends
We can see beyond the struggles and the troubles and the challenge
When we know that by our efforts things will be better in the end

They lift me higher than I could ever fly
Carrying my burdens away
I imagine our world if they hadn't tried
We wouldn't be here celebrating today

I am standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before me
I am honored by their passion for our liberty
I will stand a little taller, I will work a little longer
And my shoulders will be there to hold the ones who follow me

They lift me higher than I could ever fly
Carrying my burdens away
I imagine our world if they hadn't tried
We wouldn't be so very blessed today

I am standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before me
I am honored by their passion for our liberty
I will stand a little taller, I will work a little longer
And my shoulders will be there to hold the ones who follow me
