Empowering Voters. Defending Democracy.
Date: 9/10/2022
Subject: LWV South Central TX September News
From: Janis Richardson

Hi Friends!

September means the beginning of the election season for our League - a busy, exciting time! Between now and November 8, we will be looking for every opportunity to remind area voters to register to vote, learn about the candidates, request and return their Ballot by Mail if that is how they choose to vote, and make a plan vote in person in the early voting period or on election day. Our most important reminder is that every vote (and voter) matters!

Please join us in this run up to the November election by talking to your friends and family about voting. Are they sure they are registered (show them how easy it is to check or update their voter registration online)? Do they have a plan to vote? Who needs a Voters Guide? Who needs a ride? Who is voting for the first time, and how can you help them celebrate this big day? These may sound like small things, but it's these little things that add up to a healthier civic culture in our South Central Texas community, right? Please know that we appreciate all the ways that you help empower voters and defend democracy right here at home!

Janis Richardson
LWV of South Central Texas President

Adopt-a-Highway Cleanup
September 12, 8-9:30 am

We're getting ready for our second adopt-a-highway clean-up since our South Central Texas League joined 3,400 other participating organizations in the Texas Department of Transportation's Adopt-a-Highway Program.

Join Us - It's Fun!
On Monday, September 12, we're meeting at 8:00 am - early because of the heat - in the parking lot of the Fayette County Precinct 4 Road and Bridge facility at 1801 W Hwy 90 near the Schulenburg city limits. Please join us! All you need to do is show up - wearing a long-sleeved shirt, full-length pants, and closed-toed shoes. We will provide chilled water (bring your water bottle), instructions, a map, sunscreen, bug spray, reflective vests, and collection bags.

For more information, contact Jaci Elliott, our Adopt-a-Highway Coordinator, at 713-823-1891.

National Voter Registration Day
September 20, 2022

Tuesday, September 20 is National Voter Registration Day - a nonpartisan civic holiday celebrating our democracy. Our League will be out and about throughout the week of National Voter Registration Day and until the October 11 deadline to register to vote in the November election.

Please help us by:
> Inviting us to come to your place of business, community event, or group meeting to provide a convenient opportunity for people to register to vote or check their voter registration.

> Asking your friends and family if they are registered to vote. They can check their registration here or pick up a registration form at the post office, library or your county elections office.

> Watching our Facebook page and helping us spread the word about voter registration by sharing our posts with your friends.

Here's the Zoom information you need to join the meeting:

Rural Nonprofit Networking Group (RNNG)

League President Janis Richardson and Fayette County Leadership Team members Pat Johnson and Helen Niesner are working together on a presentation for the Rural Nonprofit Networking Group's September 14 meeting. RNNG, hosted by the Fayette Community Foundation, provides opportunities for those nonprofits that do so much good in rural communities to share their missions and visions, discuss community needs and partner. We will talk about how small nonprofits (like the League) can tap into the many (but sometimes under the radar) resources in our rural community to build the relationships that help groups work effectively. All are welcome!

September 24, 9 am - 12 noon
Celebrating National Voter Registration Day at the Columbus Market

The League has plans to have a table at the Columbus Country Market on Saturday, September 24 to encourage voter registration and run one of our popular Best Texas Animal Mock Elections for children. Look for us there at this fabulous market! We need volunteers to help with this table - contact us if you can help!

For the Upcoming November 8 Election:
  • Voters Guides will be here around October 10! We need help bundling and getting them out into the community. Contact us to help!
  • Voter registration activities prior to the October 11 voter registration deadline
  • Collecting candidate information for Vote411 (ongoing)
  • Early voting and election day reminders
We need volunteers for this election season! Contact us if you're interested in volunteering.
