August News

Hello again!

Our League just crossed an important milestone! We now have move then 50 members from four of our five counties! Our League - one of the newest in Texas - began in 2018 with five members meeting around my kitchen table. Each year has brought new possibilities and new challenges, with great energy now that we have outgrown kitchen tables and are building teams in each county.

Thank you to everyone who has joined, volunteered, offered encouragement, supported us with donations, and shared our vision of a democracy where every person has the desire, the right, the knowledge, and the confidence to participate! I hope you are as pleased as I am by our progress.

Take Action to Celebrate Women's Equality Day

In recognition of Women's Equality Day (August 26), the anniversary of the certification of the 19th amendment, please join League members everywhere in helping to get the Equal Rights Amendment across the finish line. In January 2020, the final state voted to ratify the ERA. Now Congress must act to remove its ratification timeline so it can pass once and for all. In March of 2021, the House of Representatives voted to removed the ratification timeline, but the Senate has not yet acted on this issue.

What can you do?

You can use our national League's quick and easy Take Action tool to ask your Senators to join the House in voting to remove the ratification timeline and allow the ERA to cross the finish line and become the 28th Constitutional Amendment.

Adopt-a-Highway Cleanup
September 12, 8-9:30 am

This is our second adopt-a-highway clean-up since our South Central Texas League joined 3,400 other participating organizations in the Texas Department of Transportation's Adopt-a-Highway Program. We're responsible for having at least 4 clean-ups a year on the 2-mile stretch of State Highway 90 just west of Schulenburg that we adopted.

On Monday, September 12, we're meeting at 8:00 am - early because of the heat - in the parking lot of the Fayette County Precinct 4 Road and Bridge facility at 1801 W Hwy 90 near the Schulenburg city limits. Participants are asked to wear long-sleeved shirts and full-length pants, closed-toed shoes, a hat, and sunglasses (if desired) and bring a reusable water bottle, as we will supply chilled water. We will provide instructions, a map, sunscreen, bug spray, reflective vests, and collection bags.

For more information, contact Jaci Elliott, our Adopt-a-Highway Coordinator, at 713-823-1891.

Celebrating National Voter Registration Day at the Columbus Market

The League has plans to have a table at the Columbus Country Market on Saturday, September 24 to encourage voter registration and run one of our popular Best Texas Animal Mock Elections for children. Look for us there at this fabulous market!

For the Upcoming November 8 Election:

> Voter registration activities prior to the October 11 voter registration deadline
> Voters Guide distribution & collecting candidate information for Vote411
> Early voting and election day reminders

We need volunteers for this election season! Contact us if you're interested in volunteering.

Appreciations

  • Sharing a special thank you for Lois "Robin" Robinson, The House Coffee Shop, and all those who helped with the League's July 26 Ice Cream Social in Columbus. Great ice cream, a great place, and wonderful people who are interested in the League - how wonderful is that?
  • Cindy Meredith and Sandy Smith for gearing up to ensure that candidate information for county and state representative races is available on VOTE411.org for the coming election season. We appreciate the work you do behind the scenes to help all voters have easy access to the information they need to make informed choices!
